Privacy Policy
Last updated: July 2026
This Privacy Policy explains how What?Pet™ ("we", "us", or "our") collects, uses, and shares information when you use the What?Pet mobile app or this website (https://www.whatpet.pet).
What What?Pet does
What?Pet helps you compare pet compatibility based on your lifestyle, preferences, and practical needs. It provides general pet information and lifestyle guidance. It does not replace advice from a veterinarian or other qualified professional.
Information we collect
Depending on how you use What?Pet, we may collect:
- Account information - If you sign in with Google or Apple, or continue as a guest, we use Firebase Authentication. This can include a unique user ID, an email address if the sign-in provider supplies one, a display name if provided, and provider identifiers. Guest use still creates a Firebase user ID so preferences and saved data can work on that device.
- Quiz and preference data - Answers and preferences you provide in the compatibility quiz.
- Saved pets and app activity - Pets you save, and related in-app activity needed for matching, discovery, and comparison.
- Chat and assistant data - Questions and related context you submit in the in-app AI-assisted chat (for example pet context, preference summaries, and recent conversation turns). This content may be stored with your account and sent to OpenAI so a response can be generated.
- Species requests - If you request a species that is not in the catalog, we receive the species name and any optional note you include, plus technical details such as app version, build number, and platform. We use this as catalog feedback. We do not collect your email address as part of this in-app request.
- Purchase and subscription status - Payments are handled by the Apple App Store or Google Play. We receive entitlement and transaction-related information through Apple, Google, and RevenueCat so we can unlock premium features. We do not receive your full payment card details.
- Analytics and diagnostics - We use Firebase Analytics and Firebase Crashlytics to understand app usage and diagnose crashes. This may include device type, app version, OS information, event data, and crash diagnostics. We do not set a Crashlytics user identifier to your Firebase Auth user ID.
- Website technical data - When you visit this website, Vercel hosts the pages and may process technical request data as part of providing hosting.
- Messages you send us - If you email us, we receive the information you choose to include.
On-device notes and checklists
General notes, medication notes, and checklist completion stay in the app’s local data on your device. They are not synced to your What?Pet account or sent to What?Pet servers. If your device backs up app data through Apple or Google, those backups are controlled by Apple or Google, not by What?Pet. These items may not appear on another device and may be lost if the app is deleted, its data is cleared, or a suitable backup is unavailable.
How we use information
- Provide matching, discovery, saved pets, comparison, and AI-assisted chat
- Sync account-linked preferences, saved pets, and chat history where those features apply to your session
- Review species requests when deciding what to add to the catalog
- Check premium subscription status
- Improve reliability, performance, and the product experience
- Diagnose crashes and investigate service issues
- Respond to support and privacy requests
How information is shared
Your data may be processed by third-party service providers such as Firebase, OpenAI, RevenueCat, Apple, Google, and Vercel. Those providers have their own privacy notices. In What?Pet, those providers are used as follows:
- Google Firebase - authentication, Firestore database, Cloud Functions backend, Analytics, and Crashlytics
- OpenAI - generates AI-assisted chat responses from the message content and related context needed to answer your request
- RevenueCat - subscription and entitlement management
- Apple and Google - app distribution and in-app purchase processing
- Vercel - hosts this website and related technical logs
We do not sell your personal information. We may share information if a law requires us to, or if we need to protect the safety or security of users or the service.
Where information may be processed
Third-party providers used by What?Pet may process data in more than one country.
Data retention
We keep information while it is needed to run What?Pet. In practice:
- Account-linked preferences, saved pets, and chat history are generally kept while your account exists, or until you delete the account or the related data.
- When you delete your account, species requests linked to that account are updated so the account link is removed and any free-text note is cleared. The species name may be kept as catalog feedback.
- Analytics and crash data are handled by Firebase Analytics and Crashlytics.
- Support emails are kept as long as needed to handle your request.
- Purchase and subscription records may remain with Apple, Google, or RevenueCat as part of their billing systems.
Account deletion
You can delete your account in the app under My Account → Delete account.
Deleting your account removes account-linked profile data and cloud-synced app data such as saved pets and chat history, where applicable. Species requests are updated as described above. Local notes, medication notes, and checklist data for that account are also removed from the current app installation. If your device backs up app data through Apple or Google, those backups are controlled by Apple or Google, not by What?Pet. Subscription and purchase records may remain with Apple, Google, or RevenueCat; we do not control deletion of those billing records.
