Questions to Ask Before Getting a Pet

A simple checklist before you fall in love.

Use this before the excitement takes over

Falling for a pet is fast. Living with one is slow. These questions are not meant to kill joy. They are meant to protect it - by helping you see whether your home and habits are ready.

Answer honestly. "We will figure it out later" is how regret starts.

Time and routine

Who will feed, walk, clean, and handle vet visits on ordinary Tuesdays - not only on sunny weekends? What happens when work runs late or someone is ill?

  • How many hours is the pet alone most days?
  • Who covers early mornings and late evenings?
  • Do we have time for training and enrichment?
  • What is our plan for holidays and travel?

Home, noise, and neighbours

Does our lease or building allow this pet? Do we have enough space for sleep, food, and toilet needs? Can we handle shedding, smells, or noise without constant conflict?

  • Landlord or building rules
  • Outdoor access and safety
  • Allergies or asthma in the home
  • Noise tolerance of neighbours and family
  • Furniture and cleaning expectations

People and emotional readiness

Are children ready for boundaries and supervision? Are adults ready for years of responsibility, including hard days? Is everyone in the household genuinely on board?

A pet should not be a surprise, a bargaining tool, or a test of commitment. Shared agreement matters.

Money and backup care

Can we cover food, health care, grooming, and emergencies without stress? Do we have a trusted person for backup care? Have we looked past the first price tag?

If most answers feel shaky

That is useful information. You may need more time, a different species, or a calmer life stage. Waiting is not failure. Rushing often is.

When answers feel solid, compare a short list of realistic options. What?Pet can help you think through fit - but these questions are where good choices begin.
